This is the second quake in 24 hours. On Monday, another 3.3-magnitude earthquake was recorded at a depth of 50 km, indicating ongoing seismic activity across the plateau.
Tibet, December 2, 2025, BBN Web Staff: A light earthquake measuring 3.3 on the Richter scale shook Tibet on Tuesday, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS).
The tremor struck at a shallow depth of just 5 km, raising the possibility of mild aftershocks in the region.
The NCS confirmed the details on X, posting:
“EQ of M: 3.3, On: 02/12/2025 10:41:32 IST, Lat: 29.03 N, Long: 87.23 E, Depth: 5 Km, Location: Tibet.”

Shallow quakes tend to produce stronger surface shaking compared to deeper ones, often increasing the chance of structural damage or casualties if magnitudes are higher.
The Tibetan Plateau, formed by the collision of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, is among the world’s most active seismic zones. Faulting patterns across the region include strike-slip and normal mechanisms, contributing to frequent tremors.
Historically, major quakes of magnitude 8.0 or higher have originated from large strike-slip faults, while normal faulting typically generates moderate earthquakes.
