Strong Earthquake Hits Cuba: Magnitude 5.8 Recorded on Richter Scale
Tremors felt in Guantanamo and Maisi regions; No casualties or property damage reported
Cuba, March 17, 2026: Strong earthquake tremors were felt in the coastal region of Cuba on Tuesday. According to a report by the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the magnitude of this earthquake was recorded as 5.8 on the Richter Scale.
According to local time, the tremors were felt at 12:28 AM. The epicenter of the earthquake was located approximately 49 kilometers from Cuba’s easternmost municipality, Maisi, and 93 kilometers east of Guantanamo. The depth of the quake was measured at 11.6 kilometers below the surface.
Series of Aftershocks
Several mild tremors were felt in the area even after the main earthquake. According to reports, the strongest of these aftershocks was recorded with a magnitude of 4.7. The earthquake caused panic among the residents, and many people rushed out of their homes.
Tsunami Warning
According to preliminary reports, there have been no reports of any casualties or material damage in this incident. The US Tsunami Warning Center has clarified that there is no threat of a tsunami following this earthquake, and no warning has been issued.
