No Immediate Reports of Damage

Kabul (Afganistan), June 7, 2026, BNN Web Staff: A moderate earthquake measuring 4.0 on the Richter scale struck Afghanistan in the early hours of Sunday, according to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS).

The tremor occurred at 2:54 a.m. IST and was recorded at a depth of 160 kilometres beneath the earth’s surface. The epicentre was located at latitude 36.741° North and longitude 71.525° East, the NCS said.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage following the earthquake.

Afghanistan is among the world’s most earthquake-prone countries due to its location at the convergence of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. The country’s mountainous Hindu Kush region frequently experiences seismic activity, ranging from minor tremors to powerful earthquakes.

Experts note that deep-focus earthquakes, such as Sunday’s event, are generally felt over a wider area but often cause less surface damage compared to shallow earthquakes.

The country continues to face significant challenges in disaster preparedness and response, with many communities vulnerable to earthquakes, landslides and seasonal flooding. Recurrent natural disasters often compound existing humanitarian and infrastructure challenges across the region.
