Washington DC (US), June 13, 2026, BNN Web Staff: A senior official in the Trump administration has said that Iran has agreed in principle to permanently refrain from developing or acquiring nuclear weapons under a proposed agreement currently under negotiation between the two countries.
Speaking about the talks, the official said the framework includes strict verification mechanisms, inspections, and phased sanctions relief, ensuring that Tehran receives economic benefits only after fulfilling its commitments.
According to the official, Iran has agreed to dismantle key elements of its nuclear programme, including the removal of highly enriched nuclear material and the decommissioning of facilities that could potentially support weapons development. However, technical discussions on implementation are expected to continue during a planned 60-day negotiation period.
The official described Iran’s pledge to never pursue nuclear weapons as a significant breakthrough, adding that the agreement has been structured to ensure compliance through a robust inspection and verification regime.
US officials also expressed confidence that the proposed arrangement enjoys support from key regional allies, including Israel and Gulf nations. At the same time, they stressed that partner countries would retain the right to defend themselves if Iran failed to honour its obligations.
The administration further claimed there is broad backing for the agreement within Iran’s political and military establishment, although some dissenting voices remain.
While Washington remains opposed to any infrastructure that could enable nuclear weapons development, the official clarified that the United States does not object to Iran maintaining a civilian nuclear energy programme. The goal, he said, is to ensure that any nuclear activity remains strictly peaceful and cannot be converted into a military programme.
The proposed agreement also envisions extensive sanctions relief if Iran complies with all requirements. US officials argue that the deal could help integrate Iran more deeply into the global economy while reducing tensions across the Middle East.
The negotiations remain ongoing, with both sides expected to continue discussions on technical and verification-related aspects of the proposed accord.
