Tehran (Iran), June 17, 2026, BNN Web Staff: Tensions in the Gulf region escalated on Wednesday after Iran reportedly launched multiple drones toward commercial vessels navigating the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, according to reports cited by Israeli media.
The drones were allegedly deployed by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) following the recent signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the United States and Iran. Reports indicated that US military forces intercepted the drones before they could pose a danger to commercial shipping traffic or American military assets operating in the region.
A US official told NBC News that the American military remains in close coordination with international shipping companies to ensure the safe passage of vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important energy transit routes.
The reported incident comes amid growing concerns about Iran’s military capabilities in the Gulf. According to an assessment by US intelligence agencies cited by CNN, Tehran has developed the capacity to disrupt or potentially shut down traffic through the Strait of Hormuz if it chooses to do so.
The assessment warned that Iran’s ability to influence global energy markets through the strategic waterway remains intact despite ongoing diplomatic efforts and the anticipated signing of a broader framework agreement later this week.
US intelligence officials reportedly believe Iran has strengthened its leverage by demonstrating its ability to target regional energy infrastructure and military installations. Analysts say such capabilities could have significant implications for global oil supplies and regional stability.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump stated that the full text of the recently signed agreement with Iran would be made public soon. Speaking on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in France during a meeting with United Arab Emirates President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Trump said he preferred to unveil the document in a formal setting.
“I have no problem releasing it. It is a great document,” Trump said, adding that the central commitment of the agreement is that Iran will never obtain a nuclear weapon.
Although the agreement was electronically signed on Sunday, its complete details have not yet been officially released.
The latest developments underscore the fragile security environment in the Gulf region, where any disruption to shipping lanes can have far-reaching consequences for international trade, energy supplies and geopolitical stability.
