New York, (US) April 22, 2026, BNN Web Staff: Iran has said it will not return to formal negotiations with the United States unless Washington first lifts its naval blockade, sharpening tensions amid ongoing friction in the Gulf region.
Iran’s UN Ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani stated that Tehran views the US naval restrictions as a breach of the fragile ceasefire framework. He added that Iran is open to dialogue, but only after what it calls “blockade violations” are ended.
According to Iravani, communication channels remain active and there are indications from the US side suggesting readiness to ease maritime pressure.
However, he stressed that the removal of restrictions in the Strait of Hormuz is a necessary first step before any new round of talks can take place.
He further noted that Iran is prepared for either outcome—diplomacy or continued confrontation—while reiterating that it did not initiate the current escalation. He claimed that if the blockade is lifted, negotiations could resume in Istanbul under a political framework.
The development comes as US President Donald Trump continues to assert that Iran is under severe economic strain, alleging heavy daily losses due to restricted maritime access.
Trump has also suggested that Tehran has privately indicated interest in reopening the strait to stabilize revenue flows.
Meanwhile, maritime security concerns have intensified following reports from the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations that a commercial vessel sustained serious damage after coming under fire in waters near Oman. The incident has further raised fears of escalation in one of the world’s most sensitive shipping corridors.
The Strait of Hormuz remains central to the standoff, with both economic and strategic stakes rising as diplomatic efforts stall.
