Washington [US], May 5, 2026, BNN Web Staff: US President Donald Trump on Monday made a light-hearted remark suggesting he could remain in office for another two terms, joking that he may leave the White House only after “eight or nine years from now”.

Speaking at a White House Small Business Summit, Trump used the comment while referring to tax-cut provisions for businesses, prompting laughter from attendees.

“When I get out of office in, let’s say, eight or nine years from now, I’ll be able to use it. I’ll be able to use it myself,” Trump said, drawing amusement and applause from business leaders present at the event.

His remark comes despite constitutional limits under the Twenty-Second Amendment of the US Constitution, which restricts any president from being elected more than twice. Trump is currently serving his second term in office.

While the comment appeared humorous, Trump has in recent years repeatedly sparked political discussion by suggesting the possibility of extending his time in the presidency beyond conventional limits.

In a previous interview in 2025, he had said he was “not joking” when discussing the idea of serving longer, while also noting that it was still early in his administration.

During Monday’s event, Trump also shifted focus to economic performance and national security, linking domestic growth with his administration’s foreign policy stance.

“We’re truly making America great again. We’re doing record, record business,” he said, while reiterating his position that Iran must be prevented from acquiring nuclear weapons.

The president further claimed US military strength in the region remains dominant, while criticising Iran’s defence capabilities.

“They have no Navy, they have no Air Force, they have no anti-aircraft equipment, they have no radar, they have no nothing,” he said, adding that Iran’s strategic position had been significantly weakened.

The remarks came amid heightened geopolitical tensions involving US operations in the Middle East.
