Amritsar (Punjab), September 28, 2026, BNN Web Staff : US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor visited the Golden Temple in Amritsar on Monday and paid his respects at the Sikh shrine, amid heightened security arrangements in and around the complex.

Gor has been travelling to different parts of India as part of his diplomatic engagements. His recent visits included Srinagar and Leh.

Ahead of the Ambassador’s visit, security was stepped up around the Golden Temple. Amritsar DCP Law and Order RPS Sandhu said adequate arrangements had been made to ensure the Ambassador’s security and deal with any potential situation.

According to Sandhu, around 150 civil and uniformed personnel were deployed both inside and outside the shrine complex.

Addressing reports of wall writings or possible attempts at disruption, Sandhu said security arrangements had been made across the area and that no untoward activity had been reported.

Meanwhile, Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) Acting President Emaan Singh Mann said he intended to raise issues concerning Punjab, Sikh rights and India-Pakistan relations with the US Ambassador.

Mann said the party had submitted a seven-point set of demands, including continued US diplomatic engagement to prevent renewed tensions between India and Pakistan, restoration of water cooperation between the two countries, consideration of the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) pipeline, and the opening of the India-Pakistan border for lawful trade, travel and pilgrimage.

He also referred to concerns in Punjab’s border areas and cited the impact of India-Pakistan tensions, including developments surrounding Operation Sindoor and the Indus Waters Treaty.

Mann said greater cross-border trade and travel could contribute to Punjab’s economy, while also raising concerns about the smuggling of drugs and weapons across the border.

The SAD (Amritsar) leader said he would also raise matters concerning Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) elections, religious freedom and the case of Sikh human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra.

He further said his party had sought US support for an inquiry into issues it associates with Sikh rights and raised its position on Sikh self-determination and the demand for an independent Sikh state.
