Washington DC, April 10, 2026, BNN Web Staff: A new study by researchers at the University of Chicago has revealed that zeaxanthin—a plant-based nutrient widely known for supporting eye health—may also enhance the body’s ability to fight cancer.
The findings, published in Cell Reports Medicine, suggest that this naturally occurring compound could strengthen the effectiveness of modern cancer treatments by improving immune response.
Lead researcher Jing Chen said the team was surprised to uncover zeaxanthin’s previously unknown role in activating anti-tumour immunity. “This shows that a simple dietary nutrient could complement advanced therapies like immunotherapy,” she noted.
How It Works
The study found that zeaxanthin enhances the function of CD8+ T cells—key immune cells responsible for identifying and destroying cancer cells. It helps stabilise the T-cell receptor, allowing these cells to respond more effectively when they encounter tumours. This leads to stronger immune signalling, increased cytokine production, and improved tumour-killing ability.
Promising Results in Early Tests
In animal studies, diets enriched with zeaxanthin slowed tumour growth. The effect was even stronger when combined with immune checkpoint inhibitors, a widely used form of cancer immunotherapy.
Laboratory experiments using human immune cells also showed encouraging results, with improved targeting of cancers such as melanoma, multiple myeloma, and glioblastoma.
Easily Available and Safe
Zeaxanthin is already available as a dietary supplement and is naturally found in foods like spinach, kale, and orange peppers. Its accessibility and safety profile make it a promising candidate for further research as a supportive cancer treatment.
More Research Needed
While the findings are encouraging, scientists caution that most evidence so far comes from lab and animal studies. Clinical trials will be necessary to determine its effectiveness in human cancer patients.
The research also highlights the growing field of nutritional immunology, which explores how diet influences immune function and disease outcomes.
