Washington DC [US], September 25, 2026, BNN Web Staff: Chinese President Xi Jinping has urged the United States to oppose “Taiwan independence” and exercise caution on the Taiwan issue, while calling for expanded cooperation between Beijing and Washington on artificial intelligence (AI), during talks with US President Donald Trump at the White House.
Xi met Trump on September 24 during his three-day visit to the United States, marking their second meeting in less than six months, according to a statement from China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
During the meeting, Xi said China and the US should work towards a “constructive China-U.S. relationship of strategic stability” and translate the understanding reached by the two leaders in May into practical cooperation.
He said the two countries should make cooperation the main focus, keep competition within limits, manage differences and maintain stability. Xi also referred to the latest consultations between their economic and trade teams, saying the two sides had reached a new joint arrangement.
“Cooperation is a two-way street,” Xi said, according to the Chinese Foreign Ministry. He called for expanding areas of cooperation while reducing the number of outstanding disputes affecting bilateral economic and trade relations.
Xi Calls for AI Dialogue
AI was another key issue discussed by the two leaders, with Xi saying China and the US have significant capabilities in the field and should combine competition with cooperation.
Xi proposed continued bilateral dialogue on AI, including discussions on its potential benefits and risks and joint efforts to prevent the misuse of the technology.
He also stressed that AI development should remain under human control and serve broader human interests.
Trump agreed that the two countries should maintain dialogue and expand cooperation in AI, describing the technology as an issue that concerns the future of humanity.
Taiwan Issue Raised
Xi also reiterated Beijing’s position on Taiwan, saying China’s stance on national reunification and territorial integrity remained unchanged.
According to the Chinese Foreign Ministry statement, Xi called on Washington to oppose “Taiwan independence” and handle the Taiwan issue cautiously, linking the matter to broader China-US strategic cooperation and bilateral relations.
The Taiwan question remains a major point of disagreement between Beijing and Washington. China regards Taiwan as part of its territory, while Taiwan has its own democratically elected government and maintains separate political and administrative institutions.
Trump Backs Continued Trade Dialogue
Trump described Xi’s visit as a “great visit” and called for continued economic and trade discussions following the latest negotiations between the two countries.
According to the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Trump said the two leaders maintained close communication and expressed support for further efforts towards an improved trade agreement.
The leaders also discussed international and regional issues, including the situation in the Middle East, the Ukraine conflict and developments on the Korean Peninsula.
Xi and Trump further agreed to support each other in hosting the 2026 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders’ Meeting and the G20 Summit.
The Chinese delegation included Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, Vice Premier He Lifeng and Cai Qi, Director of the General Office of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, among other officials.
Xi’s visit comes as Beijing and Washington seek to maintain dialogue while managing disagreements over trade, technology, Taiwan and other strategic issues.
